OSCA May 2016 Newsletter

May 12, 2016

The Minecraft Topic was chosen by the children. They enjoyed creeper cookies, Minecraft cupcakes and hunt the Steve in soft play.
OSCA children will now be getting the opportunity to use the MUGA for which they will need a spare pair of trainers. We have been allocated a time slot of 4.00-5.00pm on Friday 20th May. Please ensure your child brings a spare pair of trainers on Thursday if they wish to take part in football and other sports. We intend to use the MUGA on a Friday for one month and then change the day to ensure all children can benefit from the use of the facility.

Eco bronze award
We are proud to have achieved our Bronze Eco Award in recognition of our efforts in being an environmentally friendly nursery. Congratulations to the staff, parents and children who have participated.
Demii-Louise, Anna and Alex have designed a poster with our Eco rules on. You can see their fantastic poster on the noticeboard in the front foyer.
ELC children have also been out and about Litter Picking in the community.

Accident forms
M.A.P has recently been inspected by the Care Inspectorate. We will let parents know when our inspection report will be available online. It was felt during the inspection that a lot of time was spent writing up full accident / incident reports for minor injuries and as a result of this we will be introducing a new format for writing up minor accidents. We will still be using our accident/incident form for head injuries and or more serious accidents. Staff will be starting to use this new format in the next few weeks. Staff will fully explain this…We welcome your comments on this new format and any further suggestions.

When the children arrive from school they take part in a small group time to register and choose their responsibilities for the night. To ensure the children do not have to sit too long when arriving from school we have introduced a method for self-registration. Children will be responsible for collecting their own decorated stone and signing themselves in and out. Staff will continue to use the register for evacuation and billing purposes.

We have also created a responsibilities board, where the children will post their photo on their chosen responsibility for the night. This again will prevent time spent sitting at group time.

Children have added achievements to their achievement board. Staff have also added theirs to the display – Well done to Toni for passing her theory test.

Rachel Cochrane will be finishing earlier than anticipated and her last day before maternity leave will be Friday 13th May. The children have been enjoying trying to guess the baby’s name, Darth Maul was even mentioned. We wish Rachel all the best on her maternity leave and look forward to meeting the new addition to the family.
Corrie recently travelled back to America for a short stay to help out a family she worked for but will be back to cover Rachel’s maternity at the end of May.
Congratulations to Anjay Johnstone. She has recently completed her SVQ level 4 in Social Services, Children and Young People qualification.

Staff restructure
The board of directors and management have been working together over the past few months on our staff structure. It was identified in a previous inspection that our structure was too flat and management also felt there was a need for more leadership within the playrooms and to introduce promotional opportunities for practitioners. Our new structure introduces 4 new roles which includes two Room Leaders for our Daycare and ELC provision, a Room Supervisor to support the Room Leader in Daycare and also deputise for the ELC Room Leader in their absence. Our OSCA provision will be led by a Room Coordinator who will be responsible for the holiday programmes and breakfast club and after school activities.
