ELC September 2016 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Carer,

We would like to welcome all the new children starting with us this term and also welcome back to the children now moving on to their year 2 of Early Learning and Childcare. We hope you all had a relaxing and fun time over the summer, we are sure the children will let us know what you have been up to.

Staffing
We have recently completed a staff restructure which introduced more leadership roles within our existing structure. Our staff structure and staff profiles are displayed in the front foyer.
Congratulations to Anjay Johnstone who was successful in her application for Room Leader. The practitioners working alongside Anjay in the ELC team are Corrie Sherry, Kayleigh Cartner, Christine Jackson, Sarah Henderson and Taylor Kerr who is completing her modern apprenticeship.

Keyworkers
Each child is allocated a keyworker for the academic year where possible. The keyworker list is displayed on the noticeboard in the hallway for parents to view. Please check this noticeboard as keyworkers may have changed.

Topic
Throughout the year we have a range of topics, which are all taken from the children’s interests and linked to our planning. You will see information about our Topic and what we are learning on our noticeboard and around the room.
Please feel free to look at and read our noticeboards in the playroom for children’s comments, Golden rules, children’s evaluations etc.
During the first few weeks we will be looking at our golden rules and room routines.

Water bottle tags
We have introduced a new system for children’s water bottles. Each child will have a name tag hanging on their peg. When you child arrives please assist them in bringing their name tag in to the room and selecting a water bottle for their session. All water bottles are refilled at lunch time or sooner if required.

Belongings
We have found lots of lost property including coats and shoes over the summer holidays. Can all parents please ensure all belongings are named and collected at the end of each session.

Footwear
We would like to remind all parent/carers we make outdoor play available whatever the weather—sunshine rain or snow! Please ensure your child brings appropriate footwear for all weathers e.g. welly boots. We also ask that parents provide indoor shoes for their child to change in to when coming in from outside. This helps promote independence and keeps the playroom clean. Unfortunately children are no longer able to leave their indoor shoes in the named rack. We are unable to provide enough space for all children registered for ELC so therefore ask that parents leave the child’s indoor shoes hanging on the their peg or that they are taken home each day.

Coats
Please ensure your child brings a coat with them each day to enable them to access outdoor play. Please encourage your child to bring their coat in to the playroom and hang it on the white rack beside the door.

Toys from home
We would like to remind all parents that children should be discouraged from bringing toys to MAP. All of our toys and resources are risk assessed and purchased from educational catalogues. The only exception is comforters.

Children and Parents Enjoy Reading – C.A.P.E.R
This is a book lending scheme which we offer, where you and your child choose a book and take it home to share. You can choose a new book when the previous one has been returned. Each child will have a folder and a small comment book for you to write in about the books you borrow. You will receive a flyer in your child’s folder informing you of your child’s C.A.P.E.R day. We will start sending C.A.P.E.R folders out after the settling in period.

Personal Learning Plan (P.L.P) Journal
We have introduced a small notebook “my journal” into the children’s P.L.Ps. This is to be used by children for recording any recent events or interests. This journal can be taken home or on holiday for example, they can draw pictures or glue photos in to it too. Staff will also complete these with the children during their session, adding photos and comments. At the back of each journal there will be a space for stickers. When your child achieves something new for example they will be given a sticker and we will write the reason beside it.

Inspection
Mid Annandale Playcare are registered with the Care Inspectorate who inspect unannounced throughout the year. We received an inspection in April and this was carried out by Allison Tyson. She visited all playrooms, talking to children, staff and parents, and also looked through documentation and spoke to management about aspects of the facility. Directors
MAP is run by a voluntary board of Directors (parents of service users). We are currently looking for more directors to join the board. Parent/carers will have the chance to find out more about the running of the facility, help with decision making and overseeing the running of MAP. Being a registered charity we cannot legally run without a Committee and a full Committee with a “skill mix” would benefit our organisation. Current posts available include director, minute secretary and treasurer. If you are interested in joining the Board of Directors, please speak to Cilla or Shona.

Dates for your diary

Open Evening
We hold regular open evenings so that you can come along and experience some of the activities we provide for your child and what they learn from particular types of activity. You will also be able to have a chat with the staff and discuss your queries, suggestions or concerns. Our first open evening will be Thursday 22nd September from 6pm – 7pm prior to our Annual General Meeting.

Annual General Meeting, AGM
Our A.G.M is to take place at M.A.P on 22nd September 2016 at 7pm.
15% of members must attend in order to make any decisions and take a vote. Your support is vital and appreciated. Childcare will be provided for the duration of the AGM.

We are excited to start term 1 and look forward to working with you all over the next year.
