Early Learning and Childcare April 2016 Newsletter

April 19, 2016

Topic
We are still learning about spring and have been following the life cycle of a frog. Our tadpoles have now grown their legs. Our caterpillars were also delivered and the children will be watching them grow over the next few weeks.
The children had a visit from Zoolab on 12th April. Tristin from zoolab spoke to the children about animals and their babies and brought lots of different animals for the children to see and hold. The photographs from our Zoolab visit are on our Facebook page and there is a display book containing all the photos on our noticeboard.
We have been asking parents over the last week to post a pebble to let us know if their sunflower grew or not. Thank you for your responses.

PE
Our PE day is currently a Thursday.
Year 2 Children only – Please can parents to provide a P.E kit for their child on the P.E days. This part of the learning includes getting changed before and after the P.E. session which encourages independence, a skill required when starting school. Please ensure that all clothes and shoes are named.

Packed Lunches
We have introduced our new procedure for decanting contents of the child’s lunchbox. We have had some feedback from parents including time to complete this task in the morning. To reduce the time spent in the mornings we are advising parents that they can pre pack the contents at home as long it is transported to MAP in the child’s lunch box. This procedure has been introduced due to infection control concerns as lunch boxes may be sat on the floor, in the car etc. and are then placed on our lunch tables.

Lunch Menu
Our lunch menu has now been changed. A copy of the updated lunch menu is available to collect from the front office. You can also view our snack and lunch menus on our website – http://www.mapchildcare.co.uk/parent-stuff/food-menus/

Social Media
All staff who work at MAP are registered with the Scottish Social Service Council (SSSC). Each employee must abide by codes of practice set out by the SSSC. This includes becoming friends with parents on social media. Allowing a person who uses the service or their parent/carer to be our online friend or follower is not acceptable for a registered social service worker as it creates a personal relationship outside of our workplace. Lockerbie is a small community and we understand close friends and relatives use our setting and this is the only exception to online friends as relationships have been formed prior to MAP.

Gala Themed Week
We are going to be having a gala themed week in MAP. Staff ideas so far have been a cornets ball, parade and ride out. If you have any suggestions of activities we could do throughout this week please let a member of staff know.

Out and about
Our new out and about day for this term is Monday. Staff and children will be going on outings in the community. Our out and about day will change regularly and parents will be kept informed. Please ensure your child bring appropriate clothing for all weathers.

Staffing
At the end of March we said farewell to Jaimeleigh and Anca, they have now finished their employment with MAP due to transport difficulties. We wish them both good luck in the future.

We would like to welcome Corrie Sherry back to the MAP staff team. Corrie has been travelling in America and working as an Au Pair since she left MAP in December 2014. Corrie will be covering staff holidays until June before she takes over maternity cover for Rachel Cochrane.

Room evaluations
Parents arriving early
In order to safeguard the children in our care and ensure the room is not busy and crowded with lots of adults, we would ask that parents please wait in the hallway until 5 minutes before their reserved time. We would also like to remind parents that they are responsible for the care of their child until their allocated time.

Use of mobile phones
Due to evaluations carried out by management and staff we would request that parent/carers do not use their mobile phones whilst in the playrooms and they remain in your pocket or bag. This policy is currently in place for staff members and visitors and we would also like parents to follow this policy as well.

Children’s belongings
Please remember to bring children’s coats and shoes in to the playroom. Outside is open for children to access when they choose and they are encouraged to be independent when getting ready for outdoors. Please ensure belongings are named.
Thank you for your continued support
